The bulletproof style coffee has boomed in popularity with more and more people swearing by its magical energy boosting, performance enhancing, ‘give you wings’ type properties. I was too curious not to give it a go, so that’s what I did, and it totally worked for me…I wasn’t transformed into a different person…BUT I felt good, satisfied for hours, plenty of energy to train, no thought or reminiscing of other food for the first part of my day! And the coffee itself was an absolute delicious delight!
This was when I really started trying and enjoying a higher fat and lower carbohydrate way of eating a while back, I gave full keto a go as an experiment for a short while too, mainly so I felt better able to support future clients with practical tips if keto was right for them, and although I didn’t feel this was ideal for me and my goals at this time I definitely kept some aspect of it, adding fat to my coffee being one of them.
It also led me to experiment with different fat sources I could incorporate, and alternatives to coffee that could be enjoyed later on in the day.
I am not sharing this recipe solely with the low carb/keto clan in mind….healthy fats should be included as part of everyone’s diet, plus the amounts here can easily be modified to tone down the fat content.
This recipe is also about waaayyy more than healthy fats; both turmeric and coconut oil and butter support immune health, which we all want to stay on top of over these colder months, and the healthy fats in coconut are a brilliant source of energy for the body and brain, also being great for anyone struggling with those evening or mid afternoon cravings – fats from coconut can work quickly to crush these….even if you don’t make this try reaching for some coconut oil or butter to help tame the sweet tooth! I could also bang on about the health benefits of turmeric such as the anti-inflammatory properties but we’ll be here all day 😉
In short it’s a nourishing hug in a mug for those evenings when you feel like something on the more comforting side!
- 1 cup of almond milk (I use up to 1 and a half for a larger drink)
- 1 tsp Turmeric
- 1 tbsp Coconut oil*
- 1 tbsp Coconut butter*
- Tiny dash of black pepper (helps with the absorption of nutrients in turmeric)
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- Optional – few drops of vanilla
* You can adjust these to 1/2 a tbsp if you would rather a lower calorie/fat drink. You can also swap 1 for grassfed/organic butter if preferred but bare in mind the coconut butter adds a lovely sweetness that you won’t get from regular butter.
** Also You’ll notice I haven’t used a sweetener, again this is thanks to the cinnamon, milk, and butter which adds subtle sweetness but if it is still a little bitter for your tastes try adding a little honey or stevia to taste.
- Heat almond milk, either on the hob or in the microwave.
- Pour into a blender along with the rest of the ingredients and pulse until frothy and oh so creamy!
